Lady Taverners 30th anniversary concert – meet the acts

Between them, they played some of the biggest venues in the world and now some of the UK’s best-loved artists are joining together to support the Lady Taverners 30th anniversary celebrations with a gala concert at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Sunday 24 September.

The concert will see Lady Taverners President Lesley Garrett joined on stage by stars including Ruthie Henshall, G4, Jacqui Dankworth, the London Gay Men’s Chorus, Judith Chalmers and Angela Rippon to perform songs from 30 years of West End musicals.

About the artists

Lesley Garrett CBE is Britain’s best-known soprano, regularly appearing in opera, music theatre, concert, on television and CD. For more than 30 years she has enjoyed one of the most successful careers of any modern-day, classically trained soprano, winning both critical acclaim and the affection of many fans and music lovers through the breadth and diversity of her work. Internationally Lesley has performed throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea.

Their exquisite harmonies and unique arrangements of iconic songs such as My Way, Circle of Life and Bohemian Rhapsody immediately captivated the hearts of the nation and catapulted them into instant stardom. Ruthie Henshall

Ruthie Henshall’s multi-award winning career has seen her star in the most popular musicals of the past thirty years including Cats, Miss Saigon, Crazy For You, She Loves Me, Marguerite, Oliver!, A Chorus Line, Les Misérables and Chicago. She has also enjoyed tremendous success in plays, in concert and on television.

Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. Her concert appearances and her stylistically diverse recordings showcase her virtuosic, seemingly effortless mastery of a wide spectrum of genres. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui’s unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and numerous other influences that has seen her enjoy a successful career in concert, on stage and TV.

TV personalities Judith Chalmers and Angela Rippon will introduce the acts on stage and also talk about the work of the Lady Taverners to improve the lives of disadvantaged and disabled young people through sport. In their 30th anniversary year, the Lady Taverners are aiming to raise funds for 30 sports wheelchairs with a series of regional events also planned around the country to mark the occasion.

TV screens for the first time in 2004 with their performance of Nessun Dorma. However, it was their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody that became their signature tune, storming the charts in 2005. Their debut album went straight to No.1, selling more than 245,000 in the first week, making it the fastest-selling album of the year.G4 subsequently released three albums, selling over 2 million copies in the UK.
